  1. I disagree with the first part of the video, although it may be partially right :

A huge bonus offered to do work in short time, might cause enough stress that can worsen the performance of the employee. In the other hand, a long term bonus (especially competition based bonus), or a higher salary, I think that will cause the employees to work harder, and be happier in the job.

But I second the statement that says autonomy motivates the most. In fact from a personal experience: I was given a project to accomplish in a one month internship. The manager left me alone with the project and with minimal help and directions, as he wasn't expecting from me to do any major contribution to the project in such minimal time. I was free to create and develop algorithms, and to innovate in that project. The result came after a month and the managers were astonished by the quality of work delivered.

And that's my two cents, Have a good weekend

  2. I understand what Mohammed means in his first paragraph but I am not that categorical. I think that it mostly depends on the person. Some people like competition. They can even set themselves challenges just to be more motivated. In this case, competition is interesting because it is a way of working more efficiently. On the other hand, some people are stress-sensitive and do a better job when they think that the quality of their work won't have any major consequence.

The message of the video reminds me of Google's policy "20% time" to promote innovation. The company seems to have stopped using this policy a few years ago, but it has still led to some of the most important Google services, such as Gmail.

  3. I think what matters the most is the love of the thing that you are doing. If someone is working just to gain that amount of money (reward or salary) there is great chance that the stress will overcome the innovation and the productivity. But if someone wroks just because loves the thing that he's doing he will do amazing job. The case of challenges in the beginning of the video is a little bit tricky, in fact when you organize a competition based on mind effort where the higher you give is the much you take isn't effective. Although when you organize a competition whith little amount of rewards , people will try their best not to win the price but to prove that they are capable of doing it , which was proven with the case of Mohamed with his project. I think recognition and pride are more valuable than money.
